Bikes Not Barriers – making cycling accessible.
Bikes Not Barriers is part of Get Cycling, a registered Community Interest Company , that promotes cycling for transport, health, fun, leisure and the environment. The founders of this company, based in York, have a son with Down Syndrome and their experiences drove this initiative.
For people with disabilities cycling offers exercise, fun, mobility and independence: but too many cycles are bought without impartial expert advice, and without the chance to try a range of options out. As a community interest company, Bikes Not Barriers see it as their role to help individuals, charities and local authorities to make the right choices. “There is no need to buy inappropriate cycles when better and often cheaper solutions are available.”
