Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group are a parent volunteer led charity. ALL donations go directly to providing exciting and educational opportunities to children and young people with Down syndrome in and around Huddersfield.
HDSSG visited Sainsbury’s Market Street in Huddersfield today for the last time in our official capacity as their charity partners for a cheque presentation. We are thrilled to announce that after 12 months together we raised a whopping £6288.65 for our group.
The dedicated staff organised quiz afternoons, raffles, tombolas, fancy dress dates, they took on the 3 Yorkshire Peaks and cycled over 160 miles on their Big Bike Ride, they held Halloween and Christmas parties and a fantastic BBQ and fun day. We also joined them for a Christmas bag pack day.
Huge thanks to the staff, customers, our families and friends who made it such a success – enabling us to continue to offer a fantastic range of educational, sporting and social opportunities for our children and young people with Down Syndrome.
We have loved every minute with the store and look forward to working with their colleagues at Sainsbury’s Salendine Nook as part of our new partnership for 2015/16
Here’s a look at the wonderful ‘Thank You’ video we compiled for our Market Street mates:
Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group had a tremendous time at the Lindley Community Group events last weekend. The weekend was blessed with perfect weather – a lovely sunny day for the carnival on Saturday and slightly cooler conditions for the Fun Run and 10k that took place on the Sunday.
We were overwhelmed with the support from the local community and with plenty of our HDSSG families turning out to enjoy the events too it made the weekend even more special. It was particularly great to see our families take part in the fun run with their youngsters and our fantastic parents that took on the 10k were inspirational!
We must thank all our volunteers, runners, the event organisers and the sponsors for making the weekend happen. THANK YOU!
We are still totting up the fundraising total from the weekend but we are hopeful for around the £2500 mark – team HDSSG’s Virgin Money Giving Page is still accepting donations!
Here are a few pictures from the events for you to enjoy:
Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group Announced as Official Charity of Lindley 10K 2015
Organisers of Lindley 10k 2015 have announced that Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group (HDSSG) will be the charity running event’s principle beneficiary in its third year.
Whilst runners are completely free to select their own charity to run and raise funds for, the event organisers will be encouraging people to raise money for the Huddersfield based support group both at the 10K and at Lindley Carnival which takes place the day before.
HDSSG was founded over 20 years ago and arranges social, sporting and educational events and activities for children with Down Syndrome and their families. It is run on a voluntary basis by parents of children with Down syndrome. The Group presently has over 50 members and is continually trying to expand the range of activities, experiences and support it can provide.
Previous beneficiaries of Lindley 10K include the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and Whizz-kidz.
Leanne Davies from Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group said:
We are delighted that Lindley Community Group have selected HDSSG to be the beneficiary of the upcoming events. We are currently fundraising to continue our programme of activities which include monthly speech therapy and hydrotherapy sessions. We are also hoping to launch a new publication to help siblings of children with Down Syndrome which will be included in our ‘new family’ packs in 2015.
We are very grateful for the opportunity to raise the profile of our group, and to hopefully break some common misconceptions surrounding people with Down Syndrome.
“With the right support, our children are achieving more than ever before and coupled with continuing commitment of HDSSG members and families we are ensuring our children are fully included in our wonderfully diverse society!”
Lindley 10K was founded by Lindley Community Group in 2013 and continutes to be organised by Community Group Volunteers working in partnership with local schools, other community groups, local running clubs and Kirklees Integrated Youth Support.
This year the event will take place on June 29th the day after Lindley’s annual summer Carnival. On the day there will be 2 runs. At 9am there will a fun run for children between 4 and 16 years of age. Then at 9.30am the 10k will begin.
Full details of the running route and how people can get involved as runner or helpers will be made available on at the Lindley 10K Website http://www.lindley10k.org.uk/

We were up against equally smashing charities – the Huddersfield Mission & Huddersfield And District Army Veterans who were also awarded funds from the Charitable Foundation.

20 year old Max Lockwood, is launching his own T-shirt design and printing business with support and a grant from the Kirklees Youth Enterprise Centre.
What makes this venture different from many other enterprises backed by the centre is that Max has learning difficulties as a result of Downs Syndrome. But Max wants to use his new business, titled OUR T-SHIRT, to make a virtue of his disability by using his T-shirt designs to raise awareness of the condition.
Some of the designs have a common theme of Chromosome 21, the extra chromosome that causes Downs Syndrome. For example, one design features a stylish music keyboard motif with a single red key and 20 black ones. OUR T-SHIRT will also print T-shirts to customers’ own designs, including photos of family members, friends, or heroes, or slogans and designs for social messages and causes.
Max has been awarded a grant of £5000 from the Kirklees Youth Enterprise Centre (KYEC) for crucial start-up equipment for his new business following initial research, the preparation of a detailed business plan and undergoing a Dragons’ Den style selection process. As part of the programme he is provided with a business advisor and mentor. The grants scheme and the Centre is part financed through the European Regional Development Fund, The Department of Education and Kirklees Council and is based at the Creative and Media Studio School in Huddersfield.
Max intends to work with Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group to whom he will make a donation from the profits of Chromosome 21 designs. He also plans to offer printing services to local not-for-profit organisations and charities. At the launch of OUR T-SHIRT on 11th December Max said: “I am really excited about my new business and I have a clear message for my campaign. It is ‘Down’s Syndrome is part of me; I haven’t a disease and I am not a victim. I am as different as you are”.
Denise Stones, business manager at KYEC said: “Max has been awarded a grant under the KYEC scheme because his business plan met the funding criteria and it offers an innovative marketing proposition aimed at a distinct market. It shows that people such as Max with learning difficulties can, with the right support, be helped to realise their ambitions like anyone else. KYEC is about helping young people to realise their dreams, whether they are passionate about business or have a passion that they want to turn into a business.”
The Kirklees Youth Enterprise Centre project is part financed by the Yorkshire and Humber European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013. The Department for Communities and Local Government is the managing authority for the European Regional Development Fund Programme which is one of the funds established by the European Commission to help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support local businesses and create jobs.
Kirklees Youth Enterprise Centre is unique resource in the area designed to help young people 14-19 year olds set up and run their own business. As part of the programme clients were able to apply for grants for start-up equipment. All clients receive help from a dedicated business advisor and a mentor. The Centre is based at the Creative &Media Studio School, part of the Netherall Learning Campus in Huddersfield. The £4.9m Centre was set up in 2013 and is part funded through a European Regional Development Fund and the Department of Education.
The programme has helped 67 young entrepreneurs to start a business. www.kyec.org.uk
Down’s Syndrome is a genetic condition involving an extra chromosome which occurs around the time of conception and affects one in 700 births. About 750 babies with Down’s syndrome are born in the UK each year. Down’s syndrome affects people of all ages, races, religious and economic situations. It is estimated that there are around 60,000 people with Down’s Syndrome living in the UK.
People with Down’s Syndrome all have a certain degree of learning disability. This means that they develop and learn more slowly than other children. However, most children with Down’s Syndrome today will walk and talk, most will read and write, go to mainstream school and look forward to a semi-independent adult life.
Down’s Syndrome is not an illness; people with Down’s Syndrome do not ‘suffer’ as a result of the condition. With early intervention from parents and professionals and continued stimulation throughout life, most people with Down’s Syndrome will achieve well beyond former expectations
Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group expand their programme of educational opportunities for their members as they launch a Lego Learning programme!
With the help of local charity Fairy Bricks, HDSSG offer a structured learning programme using the hugely popular Duplo and Lego construction toy for children with Down Syndrome.
Siblings will also be included in the family friendly sessions as bricks are supplied for fun free play (members welcome to just play too if they prefer!)
Open to ALL our HDSSG members – no upper or lower age limits!
