READ ALL ABOUT IT!!

Fantastic news for Shabang! as reported by The Huddersfield Daily Examiner:

A creative charity which helps children with learning difficulties has received a massive cash injection of nearly £½m.

The Shabang Inclusive Learning group will use the £497,999 National Lottery grant to deliver its Bridge Builders Programme of activities and events for families with children with special needs.

The Huddersfield charity’s aim is to establish a supportive community of families with special needs children using creativity.

Thespians Kim Reuter and Russ Elias, who manage the project, have more than 20 years experience of working creatively with children with special needs.

They will use music, art, drama and multi-sensory techniques to bring families together in a supportive environment, all based at The Watershed – a multi-purpose arts base sited in Slaithwaite.

Amanda Drennan, Shabang Inclusive Learning trustees’ chairman, said: “We have been waiting with bated breath to hear this good news and we are absolutely delighted to receive this funding.

“It will enable local families to access high quality activities and give them and their children the space and time to make new friendships and establish support networks”

The five-year programme of work will include weekly sessions for parents of early years children with additional needs.

There will also be monthly family clubs with performances, crafts, singing, socialising and networking.

And there will be training courses teaching neurological enhancement through movement, including week-long residencies for children who learn best through a sensory approach

In the same month Shabang is launching its innovative educational handbook ‘The Whole Shabang!’

The book and CD of 17 catchy and original songs is a resource for teachers in special educational settings.

The songs each have routines designed to help language development, group work and participation.

Makaton sign language – which is based around symbols – is included along with the musical scores to help the children participate in the songs.

Shabang is part of a triad of arts organisations known as the Watershed Arts Practice, and is helped by KMC Creative Partners and the Arts Council of England.

16th November 2011.

Shabang! are thrilled to launch a 2013 calendar with a difference. The full colour calendar features children and young people from Shabang projects. Each month depicts a witty seasonal theme and together with signs and symbols to aid communication the calendar is an exciting new educational tool for families and schools alike.

More importantly we see the children featured in the calendar as much more than models  – they are role models. Images of people with additional learning needs are few and far between in the media or in educational resources. So we thought it was about time a positive, happy collection of photographs was produced and a calendar seemed to be the ideal vehicle to bring a series of images together.

Working alongside photographer Mike Barratt form Frogs Design, we have created rich backdrops which tell seasonal stories – from Felix’s declaration of love for February’s Valentine Day to Archie’s summer picnic in July.

The calendar celebrates a range of models from 8 month old Ella to 18 year old Max.

Local Huddersfield print firm Brooke and Learoyd have generously donated a proportion of their fee towards the costs.

The Calendars are A3 size, full colour and cost £9.99 + p&p
