Ambitions – meeting today’s needs for tomorrow’s future
Ambitions is committed to empowering young people with learning difficulties, helping them to develop skills for work and independent living through practical experiences and supported work placements within their own local community and culture. They are based in Mirfield, North Kirklees.
Set up in 2008 by Liz Feeny and Bev Sisssons, Ambitions work with people who have left school and college. They provide mini enterprises which clients help to run, thereby increasing their own skills and confidence. Sessions are planned by their enthusiastic and dedicated staff. Ambitions work with other local projects and businesses as well as schools, universities and the local community to highlight the ability not the disability.

Pontefract Pirates – Organised football for people with a learning disability.
It’s Sunday, it’s 10am and we’re heading to Pontefract for our weekly training session with the fabulous Pontefract Pirates junior football team. The pirates are run under the wing of Pontefract Collieries Football Club from the White Rose Stadium on Beechnut Lane. The club enables people of all ages with learning difficulties to play organised football, and runs weekly training and coaching sessions for all the teams. The juniors are trained by coaches Trevor Waddington & Gary Smith, who have built up a successful adult team who compete in National Disability Football Championships across the country.
The Sunday sessions run from 11am till noon at Pontefract Collieries Football Club. Over the weeks we have seen the players skills improve and as a team they put up a fine show recently at the Ability Counts League at the Goals Centre in Bradford.
New members are very welcome at the club – please contact Trevor and find out more at http://www.pontecolls.co.uk/pirates/
