The 21st March 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day.

We choose the 21st day of the third month to celebrate our  friends and family members who have Down Syndrome as it represents the extra third chromosome on Chromosome 21 , common to all those who have the Syndrome.

Across the world people will be raising awareness with the theme of “Lots of Socks”. Wearing odd socks, or lots of socks is an easily accessible way for everyone to show their support. Nurseries, schools, workplaces …. almost anyone, anywhere can join in and celebrate the achievements of people with Down Syndrome and highlight some of the issues which may effect them.

Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group is a thriving group of families who work hard to raise funds for a busy active programme of events and activities for children and young people with Down Syndrome, across South Kirklees.

“We  provide a huge range of services including extra speech and language sessions, sports workshops, hydrotherapy and  social outings as well as a comprehensive website which signposts families, schools and other professionals seeking advice and information”

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day this year our group will be pulling out all the stops as we host a Family Gala Day at Cedar Court Hotel, Huddersfield with musical acts, dancing and food … a red carpet affair which will celebrate our children and young people in style.

“It’s a marvellous opportunity to bring everybody together, of all ages , under one roof and also wonderful for all our new families with younger children to see first hand the achievements and abilities of our older members. We’ll be dressed to impress for this special occasion but will still be wearing  our odd socks!”

HDSSG would like to invite local schools and community organisations to take up the theme to help raise awareness … “Wear Lots Of Socks Day is an easy fun way to focus on Down Syndrome and if any body needs more information there is plenty on our website to help them out.”

Last year an impressive list of local schools joined in and it is hoped more will do the same for the 10th anniversary.

So, come March 21st when you see people wearing odd socks …you’ll know why!
