Please share our fundraising shopping evening with your friends. Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group are raising funds for our friends Shabang after their premises were hit by a fire this summer; leaving them unable to use the site and causing the loss of many resources and equipment.
They provide MANY of our HDSSG families with support and activities through the pre school ‘Little Tiddler’ group, the drama club for over 8’s – Up Club & not to mention the fabulous family clubs – we just had to do our bit to give back.
2015 has been another busy one at Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group. We have enjoyed lots of social activities at wonderful organisations such as Safe Anchor Trust, Leeds Donkey Sanctuary, Circus Starr, Artful Playground, Globe Arts Education and Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
We kept active with hydrotherapy sessions at the excellent Hollybank Trust’s Bradbury Centre, a family sports day held at the old Huddersfield Sports Centre site and a karate taster with the awesome Colne Valley Black Belt Academy. Our Little Stars Stay & Play sessions have also been attended well over the year thanks to our parent volunteer Angela and the staff at Golcar Children’s Centre.
HDSSG was also able to heavily subsidise exceptional educational opportunities for our members. Our speech & language sessions, Chatterbox returned with the lovely therapists from Chatterbug and coordination from parent volunteer Rachel. We worked with Kathryn of Thoughtful Communication who delivered to our families a ‘parent interaction’ course; and with the valued help of teacher volunteers Helen and Justine along with the fantastic support of charity Fairy Bricks – Lego Learners was a huge success.
Our biggest celebration of the year was our World Down Syndrome Day event which took place at Cedar Court Hotel on 21.03. It was the 10th anniversary of WDSD being officially recognised as an awareness day by the United Nations. We had a great turnout and with the help of entertainment from the Hey Diddles, The Covers & Tumble Town we partied the day away (see more HERE!) HDSSG were delighted with the support from local schools and businesses too for drawing attention the date. Thank you!
Of course we wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the dedication of our parent volunteers, families supporting our events or the financial help from our FABULOUS FUNDRAISERS!
2015 saw some very exciting partnerships for Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group. We were thrilled to be voted Sainsbury’s Salendine Nook Local Charity Partner and we have enjoyed meeting the staff and generous customers at organised bag pack events over the last few months. Our partnership with the store runs until the summer of 2016. We were also delighted to be approached by the Lindley Community Group who presented us with the opportunity to be the charity supported at the annual Lindley Carnival and 10k and fun run in June. This was a massive occasion for our charity and saw funds of over £3000 raised as well as being a huge boost to our profile and awareness raising. Amazing! Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group are a parent volunteer led charity. ALL donations go directly to providing exciting and educational opportunities to children and young people with Down syndrome in and around Huddersfield.
Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group had a tremendous time at the Lindley Community Group events last weekend. The weekend was blessed with perfect weather – a lovely sunny day for the carnival on Saturday and slightly cooler conditions for the Fun Run and 10k that took place on the Sunday.
We were overwhelmed with the support from the local community and with plenty of our HDSSG families turning out to enjoy the events too it made the weekend even more special. It was particularly great to see our families take part in the fun run with their youngsters and our fantastic parents that took on the 10k were inspirational!
We must thank all our volunteers, runners, the event organisers and the sponsors for making the weekend happen. THANK YOU!
We are still totting up the fundraising total from the weekend but we are hopeful for around the £2500 mark – team HDSSG’s Virgin Money Giving Page is still accepting donations!
Here are a few pictures from the events for you to enjoy:

Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group Announced as Official Charity of Lindley 10K 2015
Organisers of Lindley 10k 2015 have announced that Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group (HDSSG) will be the charity running event’s principle beneficiary in its third year.
Whilst runners are completely free to select their own charity to run and raise funds for, the event organisers will be encouraging people to raise money for the Huddersfield based support group both at the 10K and at Lindley Carnival which takes place the day before.
HDSSG was founded over 20 years ago and arranges social, sporting and educational events and activities for children with Down Syndrome and their families. It is run on a voluntary basis by parents of children with Down syndrome. The Group presently has over 50 members and is continually trying to expand the range of activities, experiences and support it can provide.
Previous beneficiaries of Lindley 10K include the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and Whizz-kidz.
Leanne Davies from Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group said:
We are delighted that Lindley Community Group have selected HDSSG to be the beneficiary of the upcoming events. We are currently fundraising to continue our programme of activities which include monthly speech therapy and hydrotherapy sessions. We are also hoping to launch a new publication to help siblings of children with Down Syndrome which will be included in our ‘new family’ packs in 2015.
We are very grateful for the opportunity to raise the profile of our group, and to hopefully break some common misconceptions surrounding people with Down Syndrome.
“With the right support, our children are achieving more than ever before and coupled with continuing commitment of HDSSG members and families we are ensuring our children are fully included in our wonderfully diverse society!”
Lindley 10K was founded by Lindley Community Group in 2013 and continutes to be organised by Community Group Volunteers working in partnership with local schools, other community groups, local running clubs and Kirklees Integrated Youth Support.
This year the event will take place on June 29th the day after Lindley’s annual summer Carnival. On the day there will be 2 runs. At 9am there will a fun run for children between 4 and 16 years of age. Then at 9.30am the 10k will begin.
Full details of the running route and how people can get involved as runner or helpers will be made available on at the Lindley 10K Website http://www.lindley10k.org.uk/
World Down Syndrome Day was all about the socks, but now we are all about the er…. pants! Well maternity underwear to be precise.
We have had a very generous donation of brand new stock from a well known local company and we are raising funds for our group by selling it via our Ebay page.
100% of the money from sales will benefit our group, so be sure to tell all your friends to check out our smalls!
Yesterday we went along to Huddersfield’s New Street branch of Yorkshire Building Society for a cheque presentation after the public voted us first in their charitable foundation poll. Huddersfield Down Syndrome Support Group were presented with a whopping £500!
We were up against equally smashing charities – the Huddersfield Mission & Huddersfield And District Army Veterans who were also awarded funds from the Charitable Foundation.
Thank you to everyone who supported all the charities nominated – we will all be putting the generous funds to great use!
